My oh my how wedding gowns have evolved.
Whenever possible I try to peruse our family wedding album, I like to oh and awe over the wedding gowns my grandma, mom, aunt and many others have worn. Their gowns have varied greatly throughout the years. My grandmother married in the 40’s, so her gown was made of the most beautiful satin and had the most magnificent train I have ever seen. My aunt married in the 60’s, and her gown was simple but elegant with an empire waist and some lace detailing. My mom married in the 70’s, and her gorgeous dress had an a-line silhouette with lots of beautiful lace.
It’s hard to believe that white wedding gowns were not always the norm. Queen Victoria has been credited with the popularization of the white wedding gown after she wore a beautiful white lace gown for her own wedding in 1840. In the past few years there has been a resurgence of colorful gowns. For instance, pink and black gowns have grown in popularity among brides.
Wedding gowns have gone through so many evolutions over the past century and will continue to do so. But with all the changes they have gone through one thing remains the same-the sentiment and symbolism behind the wedding gown.
These are just some of the beautiful brides of the past and the evolution of the wedding gown.
